Worth much more
Jesus says: Five sparrows are sold for just two pennies, but God does not forget a one oft them. Even the hairs on your head are counted. So don´t be afraid! You are worth much more than many sparrows. Luke 12, 6 + 7
how the values can change! For a sparrow today you have to pay € 20 to € 70 - if it is an artfully sparrow, made of wood or bronze. For real sparrows, no one spends even a penny! At that time, in Jesus' time, sparrows were tasty! You could serve me fried quail or pigeon - I would never eat that in a million years! Certainly not a sparrow!
"Food" and "hair loss" does not really fit together. But Jesus mentioned it in the same breath. He also shows with this example of how valuable we are to God. He says: our hair on the head are counted. God knows that every person drops 50 to 100 hairs every day (but they usually grow again).
Many people are also suffering about their hair loss. Hormonal changes, pregnancy and menopause can be very stressful for women.
The bald male is genetically determined. That comforts me. I'm still miles away from Yul Brynner.
If you need hair replacement parts or even hair transplants, it can be very expensive. If I'm allowed to believe the internet, British footballer Wayne Rooney got his hair transplant for 36,000 €.
The contemporaries of Jesus knew nothing of bronze sparrows and hair transplantation. Jesus makes one thing clear with his example: God doesn´t forget anything between heaven an earth. Neither the little birdies for a few cents, nor the countless hair that we lost over the years.
Jesus tells his listeners about the value each person has to God. The worth You and Me have to God, the Creator. If God already knows each of his creatures (unimaginable to me!), from the pterosauria to the sparrow, then he knows you and me too. He knows my genes and knows how many hairs will fall from my head.
Why does Jesus talk about sparrows and hair? I think there are two reasons:
On the one hand, Jesus makes clear how valuable man is in the eyes of God. I miss this sight in many people. They do not see in their fellow man a precious creature of God. On the contrary, people are enslaved, exploited, humiliated. Her dignity is often literally trampled on.
Especially when I hear about sexuality I feel that way. In pornography, people are degraded to objects. Unhappily bad, I feel the crimes of child pornography. I wonder what makes people so shameless to pass themselves off to children. Unutterable suffering adults inflict on these little creatures of God.
I am convinced that we need to look again at how valuable every single person is on this earth. If God knows the countless sparrows, hummingbirds, eagles and others, then he knows the countless people who populate his planet Earth. Each one unique. Each one valuable. Each one loved by God!
A second: even in Jesus' time, people combed one´s hair. Combs are ancient. Body and hair care are as old as humanity. Every morning, when we restore our hair, we should remember that we are God-loved people. Valuable persons. With every hair care I can thank God as he had made me. The everyday look in the mirror reminds me of the creation story of God: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27).
I wish you to discover the image of God in and at yourself. Look forward to being a God-loved, precious person! No matter how much hair you have on your head.
