Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Mathew 5:8

Dear readers,

If you live or work in Frankfurt, you can continue driving in the city with a diesel motorcar. Still! European cities such as Frankfurt have long been fighting air pollution from car exhaustion. Frankfurt has an air-clean-up plan (you can find it under Frankfurt.de). If you live in Frankfurt, you should also be able to breathe clean air.

3000 years ago in Jerusalem, the air was probably of the highest quality, pure, clean. But in the royal palace there was something in the air! King David had broken his marriage with Batseba and then had her husband assassinated (2 Samuel 11). This sin smelled to high heaven.

Finally, when God rubbed this sin under David´s nose, he asked for forgiveness. He prayed ( Psalm 51): „Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

David asks for a pure heart again. He understands that his sins have contaminated his heart. His sins have not only destroyed human relationships, but also his relationship with God. God´s holiness  does not match with his thoughts and actions. But he wants to come to terms with God again. He wants to be able to look into God´s eyes again.

French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once wrote this world-famous quote: "You only see well with the heart´s eye. The essentials  however are invisible for the eyes."

Jesus says: “Blessed are the pure at heart, for they will see God” That is what it all means: looking at God with the heart! He who sees Jesus Christ looks at God, the Father in heaven. Jesus says: „I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)

Jesus wants people with a pure heart that is free from guilt and sin. But unfortunately that does not work automatically. As the air in our cities does not get automatically clean. To achieve this, humans have to do something. We can also be active for a pure heart. I think we Christians need something like a "heart-clean-up plan". For me, this includes love of truth. Because lies pollute the atmosphere among each other. Lies destroy trust. Lies destroy marriages and friendships. Lies destroy faith. Lies destroy the relationship to God.

„Create in me a clean heart, oh God, and renew a right spirit within me”, is the name of a well-known song by Keith Green. This is a prayer that you, dear readers, could sing or hum with me this week at different times in different places. I am sure: in God's ears this will be a beautiful, common, worldwide song of praise!

God bless you!
