John 14, 6

Jesus, the road to the Father

Jesus answered, „I am the way and the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me.“

Dear Reader,

this divine triad “way-truth-life” is part of Jesus' farewell addresses. Jesus calls on his disciples to continue to believe courageously in God and in him (Gospel of John 14:1). He will return to the Father and prepare a home in heaven for those who trust in him. There is an eternal home in heaven for all those who love God the Father and the Son Jesus Christ. The way to heaven is Jesus himself. Those who trust him will find the way to the Father.

This spiritual truth led me to the stamp that I would like to show you today. It is from Italy and was created for motor drivers in 1957. In large letters, it warns drivers to “Be careful on the road”. This message is still relevant today. Crossing a red light can be life-threatening. The road to eternity should not begin violently at a road junction!

There are “red lights” as well in a figurative sense during the life of faith. They clearly say “Stop”! This far and don´t go any further! They warn against a reckless lifestyle that endangers the life and limb of others. Not forgetting one’s own life.

The apostle Paul warns the believers in the letter to the Galatians 5, 19 - 21 and shows the “red traffic lights” that Christians should observe. “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.“

Jesus Christ shows us the “green traffic light”: through HIM the way to heaven opens, and the way to the Father in heaven opens up as well. Only through HIM do we recognize the truth. His word is the truth (John 17:17). Only from HIM do we receive real life, life in heavenly abundance. HE gives eternal life, which begins here and now.

Thank you very much for visiting me and listening to me. May our good God bless you, protect you in spirit, soul and body. I look forward to seeing you again at the next short sermon on July 15, 2025.
